VOX: Democrats Celebrate Special Election Upset in Missouri
Special elections are painting a bleak outlook for the GOP.
Democrats are doing great in special elections signaling potential massive victories in the midterms. In Missouri, Democrats won a state legislature seat by a 3-point margin. The same district went to Donald Trump by 28-points in 2016. The upcoming midterm elections are set to be increasingly competitive for the Democratic party and could even lead to Democrats taking Congress.
This may have seemed unlikely even a year ago, but across the country, we are seeing massive swings in the Democrats favor. Even in elections, the Democrats lost they outperformed Hillary in the general election. In one Missouri district, Democrats narrowly lost 53-47, Trump carried that district by 59-points.
Across the board, Republicans are in retreat. The Republican Governor of Wisconsin Scott Walker has let seats stay vacant rather than risk losing another contest to Democrats. For the past decade, Democrats have been kicked out of power on the state level, 2018 may change that.
