Slate: Rob Porter’s History of Domestic Abuse Wasn’t a Secret. It’s Just That No One Cared.
Please stop asking why women don’t come forward.
Rob Porter’s secret of domestic abuse was no secret. It appeared that everyone in the White House knew about it. Porter’s despicable abuse against his first and second wife are horrifying, including both physical and emotional abuse. But just up until last week John Kelly was standing by him saying, “a man of true integrity and honor.”
Because of multiple police and FBI reports against him for domestic abuse Rob Porter, who was White House staff secretary, was only given interim White House clearance. These women told their stories, but those around Porter refused to listen.
His abuse included kicking his first wife on their honeymoon, chocking them, and blackening their eyes. John Kelly and other Republicans who defended Porter are now walking back their defenses but only because the public knows the truth. They were fine with covering up the abuse as long as they could. The coverup in the White House is shameful.
