VOX: Here’s what war with North Korea would look like
A full-blown war with North Korea wouldn’t be as bad as you think. It would be much, much worse.
Conflict with North Korea would be bloody and brutal. The human toll would not be worth whatever political gains Trump hopes to achieve. If the United States were to go to war with North Korea it would need to deploy more than 200,000 troops, more than in Iraq and Afghanistan.
When the troops arrived they would see a country already destroyed. Seoul’s proximity to North Korea’s artillery means that within the first day of conflict over 300,000 South Korean civilians could be killed by artillery shelling. If North Korea elected to use nuclear weapons the death toll would be much higher.
North Korea would be more likely to use nuclear weapons at beginning of a conflict than at the end. If this is not worrying enough the nation has a significant stockpile of biological weapons that would devastate the peninsula. A US invasion of North Korea would lead to massive death tolls from innocent North Koreans at higher numbers than American casualties.
